Please join us in honoring Dr. Farvar's memory. Help further the impact of his life and work by supporting the Life101 course for college students through the Center for Healthspan Sciences fund.
Life101 is a UCI course taught by Dr. Mahtab Jafari. It covers topics that educate students on the importance of mental and physical health and self-care. For each topic, Dr. Jafari presents an evidence-based lecture that includes the latest scientific evidence followed by practical methods to practice what they have learned from the lectures.
“My father’s passions in life are very much in line with the goals of Life101. This is why my family decided to celebrate his life by supporting this course.” —Bita
Recent research suggests that college students’ increased stress levels and unhealthy lifestyle choices are increasing at an alarmingly rate, and the Life101 course serves as a tool to teach healthy lifestyle choices, promote students’ well-being, and help them recognize and manage their stress. Dr. Jafari teaches the course through a combination of lectures, multimedia videos, workshops and group discussions that foster active learning. This course encourages, challenges, motivates and inspires students to make positive changes in their lives through how they interact with others and their environments.
Dr. Farvar supported students’ health as a general practitioner working for two universities. Life101 aligns with his lifelong love of education, self-care and overall well-being.
To inspire UCI undergraduate students to adopt healthy lifestyle choices, Dr. Jafari developed Life101 with topics that focused on students’ wellness: stress management, nutrition, exercise, emotional intelligence, mindfulness and financial management. She teaches the course through a combination of lectures, multimedia videos and discussions. In a recent publication, “Life101 Enhances Healthy Lifestyle Choices in Pre-Health Undergraduate Students,” Dr. Jafari reported that Life101 had a significant positive impact on the lifestyle of UCI undergraduate students. She strongly believes that offering Life101 to undergraduate students improves their mental and physical health. Life101 came into existence in 2013, and more than 4,500 students have already taken it. Life101 will soon become a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for all high school and college students across the world.
Dr. Farvar’s daughter, Bita, is excited about contributing her time and knowledge to the Life101 course as a guest speaker in the near future, following her father’s passions. Bita is an educator, nutritionist, and health coach.
