Please help us raise $10,000 to volunteer with Floating Doctors in Bocas del Toro, Panama and help provide a sustainable protocol to efficiently diagnose and treat patients with eye diseases in this area!
This Summer 2019, a group of 3 first-year medical students from UC Irvine School of Medicine will be traveling to Bocas del Toro, Panama to work closely with Floating Doctors and perform ophthalmology screenings. Floating Doctors is a non-profit organization providing healthcare, education and community development to underserved communities in rural Panama.
Throughout our time in Panama, we will be assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of patients at several Floating Doctors clinics throughout the Bocas del Toro Province. Concurrently, we will screen for a variety of visual pathologies among our patients and help determine if the use of a specific technology and Telemedicine could leave behind an efficient way to better diagnose and treat eye diseases in this region. We are excited to be using a cutting-edge handheld ophthalmic camera (Volk Pictor Plus) to carry out these screenings, and will assess the efficacy of the camera in this low-resource setting. Furthermore, we will assess the feasibility of a remote ophthalmology consult to diagnose disorders based on the images we acquire. The specific pathologies that we will screen for include: Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, vascular occlusion, hypertensive retinopathy, cataracts, pterygium and visual acuity deficits.
We hope that our work can help improve the efficiency of the ophthalmologic care Floating Doctors can provide for their patients. We are excited to volunteer with Floating Doctors and help give great care to the people in the Bocas del Toro Province in Panama!

We can't thank you enough! $50 will help us be able to provide adequate charging capabilities and supplies needed to ensure that our Volk Pictor Plus camera we are testing can last in the more rural clinic locations so that we can utilize this technology on all the patients in all locations that Floating Doctors serves!
