The Farghalli Mohamed Award in Materials Science and Engineering

MSE@UCI would like your support to expand the impact of a new student award in honor of Professor Emeritus, Farghalli (FAM) Mohamed. So far, we've raised $52,810.

The Farghalli Mohamed Award in Materials Science and Engineering

It's not too late to help us honor the legacy of Professor Farghalli Mohamed (FAM) by creating a student award in his name! The last day to donate is June 30th, 2021!

When FAM came to the School of Engineering in 1980, there were only 13 faculty members, 30 graduate students and 300 undergraduates in all of Engineering! FAM founded the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program which has lovingly earned him the nickname, “The Godfather”. He is also credited with creating the interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering concentration (known now as Materials and Manufacturing Technology), the fully accredited MSE major and MSE minor, and the MSE Ph.D. program.

A strong advocate for undergraduate participation in research, FAM often sought out students to get them involved in research opportunities. He was active for many years with UC LEADS (Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees), Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), and California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP), mentoring hundreds of students over the years.

Known around the UCI campus as the friendly, fun-loving, and brilliant engineering professor in flip-up sunglasses, FAM has touched the lives of countless students, fellow faculty, and staff.

Your gift will be used to create an endowed student award* in FAM’s name so that his passion for collaboration, providing opportunities for students, and advancing research, will continue to enrich the lives of the Samueli School of Engineering community.

*In the unlikely event that the minimum for establishing a named endowed fund, currently $50,000, is not met, all funds raised in this campaign will go toward establishing an unnamed, endowed fund in support of the same purpose.
