Luis J. Medina, MA, MBA, was the Director of Financial Aid for the School of Medicine. He had a master's degree in Computer Science from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and an MBA from Long Beach State University. Luis joined UCI in 2006, but was with the University of California system for several decades. He passed away tragically on August 19, 2020 after being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
Luis had a big heart, warm smile, and calm demeanor. He cared deeply about the students and always found creative ways to ensure that students had sufficient funding to be successful. Very important to him was supporting students who were in times of financial crisis. For this reason, we would like to set up the Luis J. Medina Memorial Emergency Funds Scholarship. This scholarship fund is intended to support School of Medicine students who are in financial crisis.
*In the unlikely event that the minimum for establishing a named endowed fund, currently $50,000, is not reached, all funds raised in this campaign will go towards establishing an unnamed endowed fund, currently $25,000, to provide support for the same purpose and used to create the Medical Student Emergency Fund Scholarship. In the unlikely event that neither minimum is met to create an endowed fund, all funds raised in this campaign will go towards the Medical Education Scholarship fund, a current-use fund that provides scholarships for medical students. The funds will still be issued to student with the same intent.
