The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted an increasingly urgent need for rapid and economical testing of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and other common pathogens, such as the flu virus. We are developing virus detection methods that allow sample collection, and in some cases even virus detection, by the user. This method greatly simplifies the handling of clinical samples, reducing cost and time of analysis.
Additionally, we are developing molecules that bind to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and neutralize it. These molecules will be used for several types of diagnostic devices that will be able to detect the virus in the environment in real-time.
Our goal is to raise money to pay for reagents, instruments, and to support student researchers who will be developing this technique. Most of the funds will go towards plasticware, enzymes, and synthetic DNA used for collection and sample analysis. Some of the funds will go towards purchasing a state-of-the-art instrument for analysis of these samples.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grow, the need for efficient virus detection becomes ever more urgent. Early detection of virus outbreaks will be essential for prevention of further health crises and for the return to life as we knew it before March 2020.
