Pride is a month of celebration, education, and uplift, whether you identify as LGBTQ+, or are a community member, a scholar of the field, a passionate ally, or someone who dreams of a kinder, more inclusive, and more equitable future. June 1st signals the beginning of Pride Month 2021 and UCI Humanities is excited to celebrate by remembering queer history and seeking support for students focusing on LGBTQ+ scholarship campus-wide.
In the spirit of this month of celebration, education, and inclusion, we ask you to join us in our pursuit of excellence by supporting our undergraduate students and helping us surpass our goal of raising $5,000 by June 30!
If we meet the first $4,000 goal, the law firm of Yekrangi & Associates will generously match it with an additional $1,000 for a total of $5,000!
UCI Humanities remains firm in the mission to provide students with a strong foundation in critical studies of gender and sexuality as complex historical and cultural phenomena that can be understood through multidisciplinary humanistic inquiry that takes up film, literature, art, and contemporary culture as well as social movements, activist histories, and cultural critique.
College, as we know, is a pivotal time for undergraduates. For LGBTQ+ students and those interested in learning more about queer studies, it is an especially critical time. Students may have been raised in an environment where gender identity was never discussed, and/or within a culture that is not open to gender fluidity or non-binary identities. Undergraduates come to UCI with an open mind, with the opportunity to expand their understanding of themselves and those around them. We seek to support this journey. Our students, in turn, give back by sharing knowledge, serving their community, and making sure that tomorrow is a brighter day. Together, we can make a lasting impact on these students’ futures.
Your gifts are invaluable; they allow our students to truly reach their full academic potential, whether as a major in GSS, a minor in Queer Studies, or through interdisciplinary studies in the School of Humanities and across campus. Your donation will support student awards, scholarships, internships, and experiential learning opportunities that expand our students’ horizons beyond the classroom. By supporting this initiative, you will help students across the campus comprehend, imagine, and work to create a world that was not available to older generations.
UCI Humanities has been at the forefront of gender and sexuality studies since 1975, when a Women’s Studies Interdisciplinary Program was established that grew into today’s Gender and Sexuality Studies Department. A queer studies minor was established in 2005. The Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies offers a major and a minor, while also training future scholars from across campus in the Graduate Feminist Emphasis. Students from various majors and schools across campus join the Humanities to learn about LGBTQ+ issues in a wide range of fields and are trained by faculty across the school who continue to receive honors and recognitions for their research, and we remain committed to awarding our students for their academic excellence.
