UPDATE: WE ARE STILL GOING
We have been heartened by the generosity of the greater UCI community and by the number of friends of the campus who have contributed to our efforts to support Scholars at Risk at UCI since our original launch! Thanks to all of you who have contributed!
We are currently working with several agencies toward inviting two Afghan scholars to UCI. The situation in Afghanistan is still challenging for both, but we are hopeful that our efforts will pay off.
At this juncture, we would like to ask for your help in reaching our goal. You can help by giving now and then forwarding the link to five (5) of your friends and encourage them to join you in contributing to this project! Thank you in advance for your support! You will be making a real difference!

The UCI Scholars at Risk program is launching a crowdsourcing campaign on behalf of our campus to respond to the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan and the urgent need to help academics, lawyers, artists, and other civil society actors—especially women—to flee the country.
To date, UCI campus administration, with Provost Hal Stern at the lead, has committed $150,000 to enable travel to Southern California and sponsorship by UCI.
Our goal is to raise a matching $150,000 from the greater UCI community quickly—by Sunday, October 31st.
When we reach this goal, we will be able to sponsor two to three Afghan colleagues and their families at UCI.
Please make your gift today to support this crucial initiative. Your gift will go directly to paying for transportation out of Afghanistan or from a third country to the U.S., visa-related costs, salary, health insurance, and basic living expenses, so that our colleagues may enrich our campus community and continue their education, research, and teaching in a safe environment.
We are working with the Scholars at Risk program (https://www.scholarsatrisk.org) and the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund (https://www.scholarrescuefund.org/), two international networks organized to support academic freedom, to respond to this crisis. – We will update this page with information about the individuals we are sponsoring as that information becomes available.
We hope that UCI’s commitment will inspire other institutions to help the women, men, and children facing grave risks in Afghanistan to find refuge. Please make your gift today – and please share this campaign on social media as widely as possible to spread awareness and raise additional support.
