Formula SAE Michigan 2024 is an SAE Collegiate Design Series event that will feature student teams representing 75 universities across the world. FSAE competitions are overseen by a dedicated group of industry leaders and involve technical and safety inspections to ensure rules compliance for every system, presentation our team to display our designs with industry professions, and dynamic events in which our team will race our car for direct comparison is several performance categories: acceleration, skid pad, autocross, endurance, and efficiency.
2023 - 2024 Anteater Formula Racing Team
Anteater Formula Racing is building an open-wheel, internal-combustion race car inspired by Formula 1 and IndyCar racing to compete at Formula SAE Michigan in May 2024. Our team of 59 dedicated engineering students participate in the design, manufacturing and testing of our race car to gain engineering skills needed for an industry that is highly technical, fast-paced and competitive. The team collectively spends 10,000+ working hours each year developing our vehicle and various subsystems, alongside competitive engineering coursework. Anteater Formula Racing’s best finish in an FSAE competition is 19th at Formula SAE Lincoln, Nebraska!

2023-2024 Master CAD rendering of Gastly the Race Car
Aerodynamics: Craft the front and rear winds, bodywork, and diffuser to optimize airflow, reducing drag and enhancing downforce. Utilize fluid mechanics expertise to conduct computer flow simulations, wind tunnel tests, and on-trach trials for design validation. They enable our race car to fly!
Chassis: Engineer the single, rigid structure housing all subsystems with precision using CAD software. Balance system requirements in a compact, weight-efficient design prioritizing driver safety. They are the bones of our race car!
Electronics: Develop wiring harnesses linking onboard data systems, including engine management, to MoTeC digital displays. Gather data from numerous sensors for future analysis, ensuring efficient performance monitoring.
Human Interface: Ensure driver comfort and safety, optimizing vehicle performance. Design brakes for swift stops, including shifters, steering wheels, and seat belts, using CAE software for precision engineering. They are the hand and feet letting our race car be quick on its wheels!
Suspension: Fine-tune shocks, dampers, and controls arms to enhance handling and maximize run times. Connect the chassis to the road, ensuring optimal performance through constant adjustment. They are the joints that let our race car run!
Powertrain: Modify motorcycle engines for FSAE cars, designing intake, exhaust, and cooling systems. Employ thermodynamics and engine tuning software for customized tunes, enhancing reliability, power, and efficiency. They are the lungs that let our race car breathe!
Vehicle Dynamics: Develop custom simulators and employ professional-level software for lap time simulations. Analyze results to predict performance and validate design choices, aiming for maximum points in Formula SAE Dynamic Events. They are the eyes of our race car!
Our mission is to empower engineering students with real-world experience, equipping them with professional skills and practices essential for success in their future careers. Through hand-on involvement in designing, building, and optimizing Formula SAE race cars, students gain invaluable insight in all types of engineering. Here at AFR we are making sure that our engineers are learning the skills to tackle challenges they will face in industry, refine their problem-solving abilities, and hone their technical expertise beyond UCI!
